Signs Your String Trimmer Needs Service

If your trimmer / weed whacker isn’t cutting clean or running right, bring it in if you notice:

  • Hard starting / won’t stay running — only fires on choke, stalls when you squeeze the trigger

  • Bogging or loss of power — revs in the air but dies or falls flat under load

  • Surging or hunting at idle — RPMs rise and fall on their own (air/fuel issue)

  • Short run time / fuel starvation — cracked fuel lines, clogged filter, or bad primer bulb

  • Excessive vibration — worn clutch, bent drive shaft/cable, or damaged head

  • Head won’t feed line / jams — wrong line size, worn eyelets, or damaged bump mechanism

  • Line welds or melts together — overheated head, incorrect line, or debris packed inside

  • Noisy rattles or grinding — failing gearbox/angle head or loose fasteners

  • Overheating or hot smell — clogged spark arrestor, lean carb settings, or packed debris

  • Electrical/battery issues (cordless) — won’t charge, intermittent power, or sudden shutoff

Catching problems early prevents costly damage (clutch, piston/cylinder, gearbox) and keeps your trimmer reliable for weekly edging and clean-ups.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s time for a tune-up or repair. Addressing problems early can prevent costly breakdowns and extend the life of your string trimmer.

We’re here to keep your equipment running smoothly all year round. Schedule your string trimmer repair or seasonal maintenance with Titus Mower and enjoy dependable service you can trust.

String trimmer repair FAQ

How do I know what size trimmer line to use?

It depends on your trimmer model — using line that’s too thick can overload the engine and damage the head, while line that’s too thin won’t hold up. Check your owner’s manual, or bring the trimmer in and we’ll match the correct line size. We stock the most common sizes.

Is it worth repairing my string trimmer, or should I buy new?

For quality units (STIHL, Husqvarna, Echo commercial), most repairs are worth it. A $40–80 carb rebuild or clutch replacement gives you a few more years of use from a trimmer that cost $250–400 new. Budget homeowner models with major engine problems are usually better off replaced.

Do you work on battery-powered trimmers?

Yes. We can diagnose battery and charger issues, test electrical connections, and handle mechanical repairs like trimmer head replacement and shaft service. For major battery or circuit board failures, we’ll let you know if it’s a warranty issue or if replacement makes more sense.

My trimmer starts but has no power. What's going on?

The most common causes are a clogged spark arrestor screen (in the muffler), a dirty air filter, or a carburetor that needs adjustment. On 4-MIX engines, tight valves can also cause power loss. These are all routine fixes.

Can you convert my trimmer head to a different type?

In many cases, yes. We can swap bump-feed heads, fixed-line heads, and some blade or brush cutter attachments, depending on the model and shaft type. Bring it in and we’ll let you know what’s compatible.
