Common chainsaw problems we fix

If your saw isn’t running or cutting like it should, bring it in if you notice:

  • Hard starting — needs many pulls, only starts on choke, or won’t start hot/cold

  • Bogging or stalling under load — cuts fine in air but dies in the cut

  • Chain won’t oil — dry bar, burnt/blue chain, or smoke from the bar area

  • Crooked cuts or grabbing — worn bar rails, uneven rakers, or dull chain

  • Chain creeps at idle — clutch sticking or idle set too high (safety issue)

  • Weak power / “won’t rev out” — dirty carb/spark arrestor, clogged air filter, or low compression

  • Excessive vibration — torn anti-vibe mounts or loose/warped components

  • Leaking fuel or oil — wet case, strong fuel smell, or oil puddles under saw

  • Noisy or rough running — rattling clutch, worn sprocket, or bearing noise

  • Chain won’t stay tight — stripped side cover, worn bar/sprocket, or stretched chain

  • Overheating — lean mix, blocked cooling fins, or packed chips around the clutch cover

Addressing these issues early can prevent bigger repairs and save you money.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s time for a tune-up or repair. Addressing problems early can prevent costly breakdowns and extend the life of your chainsaw.

We’re here to keep your equipment running smoothly all year round. Schedule your chainsaw repair or seasonal maintenance with Titus Mower and enjoy dependable service you can trust.

Chainsaw repair FAQ

How often should I sharpen my chainsaw chain?

A good rule of thumb is every 2–3 tanks of fuel for regular cutting, or immediately if you hit dirt, rock, or metal. A sharp chain pulls itself into the wood — if you’re pushing, it’s dull. We offer quick chain sharpening, or we can put on a fresh chain.

How do I know if my bar needs replacing?

Check for a pinched or spread bar rail (the chain should slide freely but not wobble side to side), wear grooves on the rails, or a bent bar. If the chain keeps derailing or cutting crooked even after sharpening, the bar is usually the culprit. We can dress minor bar wear or replace it if needed.

Is it worth repairing an old chainsaw?

For a quality saw (STIHL, Husqvarna), most repairs are well worth it. These saws are built to be serviced. Budget or consumer-grade saws with major engine problems (scored cylinder, failed crank bearings) usually aren’t cost-effective to rebuild. We’ll give you an honest recommendation if you should repair or replace your chainsaw.

My chainsaw sat for a year with gas in it. Can you fix it?

Almost certainly. This is one of the most common repairs we do. Stale fuel gums up the carburetor, clogs fuel lines, and fouls the spark plug. We’ll clean the fuel system, rebuild or replace the carb, and put in fresh components so it runs like it should.

Do you work on both gas and battery-powered chainsaws?

Yes. We service gas chainsaws (2-stroke), and we can diagnose and repair many common issues with battery-powered saws, including battery and charger testing, bar and chain service, and oiler system repairs.
